MISSISSAUGA — Rudy Cuzzetto, MPP for Mississauga—Lakeshore, is inviting residents to join local leaders and members of the community in Port Credit on Saturday morning for “One Lake, Our Ontario”, a celebration of Lake Ontario and its enduring place in the history, heritage and identity of Mississauga and the Province of Ontario.
The community gathering will take place at the Don Rowing Club, 25 Front Street North, Port Credit, on Saturday, September 5 at 10:00 a.m.
Cuzzetto will be joined by Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish and Ward 1 Councillor Stephen Dasko, who will also deliver remarks celebrating Lake Ontario and the generations of people and communities whose lives have been shaped by the lake.
“Lake Ontario is more than a body of water; it’s part of who we are,” said Rudy Cuzzetto, MPP for Mississauga—Lakeshore. “For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples have lived, travelled and gathered along these waters. Generations of families have since built communities, businesses and traditions along its shores, and here in Port Credit, the lake remains at the heart of our identity and our way of life. Whatever changes around us, one thing will not: this is Lake Ontario, now, always and forever.”
“Long before President Trump, this lake was called Lake Ontario,” added Premier Doug Ford. “Long after President Trump is gone, it will still be called Lake Ontario.”
The event will recognize the long relationship of Indigenous peoples with Lake Ontario and the Credit River, including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, part of the Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) Nation, as well as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and Huron-Wendat and Wyandot Nations.
The celebration also reflects the Ontario government’s broader commitment to protecting and celebrating the province’s identity, heritage and natural environment.
For Port Credit, the connection between the community and the water stretches back generations. The Credit River flows into Lake Ontario at the heart of the village, and the waterfront has helped shape Port Credit’s Indigenous, commercial, recreational and cultural history.
Former Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey, a passionate champion of Mississauga’s waterfront, famously described water as the “glue” that connects people and helps bridge the journey from awareness to appreciation, connection and action, a vision that continues to influence the transformation and protection of Mississauga’s waterfront today.
“Lake Ontario and the Credit River have always been at the heart of Port Credit,” Cuzzetto added. “This Saturday is an opportunity to come together — residents, families and community leaders — to celebrate that shared heritage, and reaffirm something simple and enduring: One Lake. Our Ontario.”
