Ontario Connecting 11,100 More People to Primary Care in Mississauga

$4,877,000 investment brings the province one step closer to connecting everyone in Ontario to primary care by 2029

MISSISSAUGA – Today, Rudy Cuzzetto, MPP for Mississauga—Lakeshore, visited CarePoint Health to announce an investment of nearly $4.9 million to help connect up to 11,100 more Mississauga residents with a family doctor or primary care provider.

This funding is part of the Province’s $3.4 billion Primary Care Action Plan, which is supporting nearly 200 teams across Ontario to connect everyone in the province to a family doctor or primary care provider by 2029.

CarePoint Health, a community-based primary healthcare organization working in partnership with Mississauga Health, Credit Valley Family Health Team, Summerville Family Health Team, and the LAMP Community Health Centre, successfully connected over 12,000 residents to a family physician over the past year.

This investment will build on their attachment progress, and expand access to interdisciplinary, team-based care to patients and physicians across Mississauga. The funding will also bring specialized services for older adults and mental health and addictions from community partners into primary care teams.

It means earlier treatment, better health outcomes, and greater peace of mind for families, knowing quality care is available when and where they need it.”

This funding builds on the government’s broader efforts to strengthen primary care across the province. Ontario already leads the country with nearly 90 per cent of people connected to a primary care provider, and remains on track to connect everyone in the province by 2029. CarePoint Health is an Ontario Health funded, community-based primary health care organization that works with physicians, hospitals, community agencies, pharmacies, and government partners to improve access to care, strengthen health equity, and support integration across the health system. Over 130 family physicians are currently affiliated with CarePoint Health’s network.
Ontario’s Primary Care Action Team is drawing on best-in-class models of care to implement its action plan, supported by the government’s investment of more than $3.4 billion to connect approximately two million more people to primary care by 2029, which will achieve the government’s goal of connecting everyone in the province to primary care.
The government is making significant progress on its goal of clearing the Health Care Connect waitlist. That waitlist has been reduced by more than 87 per cent, as the plan continues to hit its targets and deliver faster access to high-quality care.

Interprofessional primary care teams connect people to a range of health professionals that work together, including family physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, registered practical nurses, physician assistants, physiotherapists, social workers, dieticians and pharmacists, helping patients to receive more connected and convenient care.
Since 2018, Ontario has added over 100,000 additional nurses and nearly 20,000 additional physicians to its health-care workforce, including an over 14 per cent increase in family doctors.
